Work Ready

What is a CV or Resume?

A CV (short for curriculum vitae) or resume is a document that shows who you are, what you’ve done, and why you’d be great for a job or apprenticeship! It’s a way to highlight your education, skills, experiences, and even hobbies or extracurricular activities. Think of it as your personal “advertisement” to help employers see your potential.

You don’t need to have a long list of work experience to create a strong resume. You can include activities like sports, volunteering, or even breakdancing—yes, really! These experiences show off important skills like teamwork, problem-solving, or dedication, which employers love to see, even if they’re not directly related to engineering or the job you’re applying for.

Use this template as a guide to help you create your own resume! We’ve included examples to make it simple to get started. Remember, this is your chance to show what makes you unique and why you’re ready to take on exciting opportunities.

What is a Referee?

A referee is someone, like a teacher, coach, or boss, who can speak about your skills, character, and work ethic to an employer. They help show why you’re a great fit for the job!

If you’ve worked or volunteered, your supervisor can be a referee. If not, a teacher or community leader is a good choice. Always ask for permission first so they’re ready if contacted.

Having referees shows you’ve built strong relationships and are ready to take on new responsibilities—go for it!

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a short, professional letter you send with your resume when applying for a job or internship. It’s your chance to introduce yourself, explain why you’re interested in the role, and show how your skills and experiences make you a great fit.

Think of it as your personal pitch—it tells employers why they should hire you! A good cover letter is concise, tailored to the job, and highlights specific examples of what you bring to the table.

It’s a great way to stand out and make a positive first impression. You’ve got this!
